Though Newport Beach is home, I couldn’t point to any one home as my childhood home.
I lived in 7 houses growing up in Newport Beach.
Newport Beach has been home since I was six weeks old. My first stop was my family’s beach house. Rough time for a newborn, living ocean front in Newport Beach.
It was my grandparents’ summer home for over 40 years, and it was a lot of fun to have a place like that to call home. Like many of the homes in which I lived, it looks very different. Instead of the beach cottage you see above, it’s now a huge (relatively speaking) oceanfront home which sits on almost the entire lot.
Still, it brings back so many memories when I bike or rollerblade down the Newport Beach Boardwalk, even though it’s a totally different home.
The other area of Newport Beach that really feels like home is Newport Shores. I have lived in four Newport Shores homes and visited what feels like the majority of the rest of them.
This is a great place to live too. It’s right across the street from the beach, and just a few minutes brought us to the beach almost every day during the summer time. Need a snack? Just run back across the street to Newport Burgers for a burger and fries, Tradewinds for a drink or candybar or Antonucci’s for a slice of pizza.
Tired of the beach, there was an olympic size pool in Newport Shores where we also spent many enjoyable hours.
Newport Shores homes have changed a lot since I was growing up. Though some of the homes are still original, many have been upgraded, added on to, or completely torn down and built custom. You can get some idea of what the differences are by looking at the pictures in this post.
What was it like growing up in Newport Beach? Probably better than most people who envy a Southern California local can imagine. Where else can you walk to the beach daily, learn to surf as a matter of course, wander into the store barefoot, in a bathing suit, with nobody batting an eye, visit Disneyland any time the mood strikes, and all in a place that has better weather than 95% of the planet.
